What to do if  Your Business is Subject to a Ransomware Attack

If your business does suffer from a ransomware attack, you should act quickly to reverse the damage and stop further damage from taking place.

  • If you have been attacked, start unplugging your network cables from the back of your computers to prevent any further encryption or data exfiltration.

  • Get your IT staff involved. Let them know what is going on and get them working on the problem.

  • Report it to the MC3 Michigan Cyber Command Center - mc3@michigan.gov. Any information that is reported to this Michigan State Police Department regarding cyber security is exempt from FOIA, so any information you share is not public information.

Once your data has been compromised, it can be very difficult to recover it, especially if you do not have backups. Ransomware is a crime, and the Michigan State Police Department does not recommend that you pay the ransom. It is ultimately up to you but keep in mind, there is no guarantee you will get your data back.
